{"id":302,"date":"2013-04-19T02:09:07","date_gmt":"2013-04-19T02:09:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/montgomeryminds.com\/blog\/?p=302"},"modified":"2013-04-19T02:09:07","modified_gmt":"2013-04-19T02:09:07","slug":"program-uninstallers-programs-that-uninstall-other-programs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/montgomeryminds.com\/blog\/program-uninstallers-programs-that-uninstall-other-programs\/","title":{"rendered":"Program Uninstallers (Programs that uninstall other programs)"},"content":{"rendered":"<style><!--\nstrong { color: #FFFFa0; background-color: #000000;  }\n--><\/style>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Uninstallers&#8221; are programs that uninstall other programs, like Windows &#8220;Add or Remove Programs&#8221; or &#8220;Programs and Features&#8221; does.\u00a0 These programs are replacements for Windows &#8220;Add or Remove Programs&#8221; or &#8220;Programs and Features&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>My fav is <a title=\"http:\/\/www.zsoft.dk\/index\/software_details\/4\" href=\"http:\/\/www.zsoft.dk\/index\/software_details\/4\" target=\"_blank\">ZSoft Uninstaller<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>CAVEAT:<\/strong> ZSoft Uninstaller and another popular choice, &#8220;Total Uninstall&#8221; both have what&#8217;s called a &#8220;<strong>snapshot method<\/strong>.&#8221;\u00a0 The &#8220;snapshot method&#8221; works by taking a picture of your registry and your files before and after the install of a program.\u00a0 So, yes, you have to be alert to this <strong><em>before<\/em><\/strong> you install the program.\u00a0 If your program is already installed, you have to use ZSoft&#8217;s more benign method, or Revo Uninstaller (which i also like and used for a while).<\/p>\n<p>I think <b><a title=\"View the profile of Steven Avery at DonationCoder.com\" href=\"http:\/\/www.donationcoder.com\/forum\/index.php?PHPSESSID=cj0bgseu9p0sco09lgnr2psjm1&amp;action=profile;u=28554\">Steven Avery<\/a><\/b> at <a title=\"http:\/\/DonationCoder.com\" href=\"http:\/\/DonationCoder.com\" target=\"_blank\">DonationCoder.com<\/a> phrased it extremely well:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>1) One caution on the snapshot method.\u00a0 Installs sometimes go ahead and install .Net components or Visual Basic or Visual C++ or maybe other semi-system components, perhaps Java as well.\u00a0 A snapshot method would by default go back and try to undo those parts of the install, which can cause problems.<\/p>\n<p>My take &#8212; note carefully during the install whether anything like this occurs and if so &#8212; note this carefully where you won&#8217;t forget (perhaps a dummy folder name) &#8212; the simplest is uninstall in the more generic Revo-style way, rather than the snapshot way. Or if you do the snapshot method anyway, come up with your plan on how to handle this.\u00a0 (e.g. Java is less of a problem because you could use JavaRa and then reinstall).\u00a0 However I think you would normally simply not use the snapshot method if such external components are installed. Some of our accomplished Total Commander users might share with us their experiences on this aspect.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>That aside, ZSoft Uninstaller can be very helpful in cleaning up after an install.\u00a0 Revo Uninstaller can do this too.\u00a0 I ALWAYS check to make sure what I&#8217;m deleting is ok to delete.\u00a0 When in doubt, i leave it.\u00a0 So this feature is for somewhat advanced users.<\/p>\n<p>I also think <b><a title=\"View the profile of Steven Avery\" href=\"http:\/\/www.donationcoder.com\/forum\/index.php?PHPSESSID=cj0bgseu9p0sco09lgnr2psjm1&amp;action=profile;u=28554\">Steven Avery<\/a><\/b> (still at <a title=\"http:\/\/DonationCoder.com\" href=\"http:\/\/DonationCoder.com\" target=\"_blank\">DonationCoder.com<\/a>) gave a really good summary of the options available:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Uninstaller roundup, with the emphasis on 3 solid in-depth programs.<\/p>\n<p>Revo Uninstaller, Total Uninstaller and ZSoft Uninstaller.<\/p>\n<p>And 7 more down below.\u00a0 Half of the 10 are freeware.\u00a0 Ok, on recount there are 11, 6 free, but we can consider FARR a special case. I&#8217;ll chop &#8217;em up.)<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Total Uninstall &#8230; takes snapshots before and after &#8230;the best way &#8230; ZSoft Uninstaller can do this too &#8230; Revo searches for leftovers .. the current version of ZSoft Uninstaller doesn&#8217;t do this &#8230;the newest beta &#8230; does have this feature &#8211; search the desktop, start-menu, send-to menu, application data folder, &#8216;application main folder&#8217;, and registry for leftovers (if you tell it to)&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The problem with Total Uninstall (which I used awhile) and any before-and-after-snapshot style is that it can make the installation far more cumbersome.\u00a0 Who wants to do that for anything but the most complicated installs ? (Maybe some sort of Visual Studio or Dreamweaver or a complicated virtual sandbox pseudo-defense system.)\u00a0 Or an install that you really have doubts about.\u00a0 (Does TU work very well in a simple no-snapshot mode ?\u00a0 Dunno, there are a couple of reviews on onsite and here and there.)
